THEME STATEMENT
The theme in the novel, Lord of the Flies, is that everyone has a little bit of evil hidden inside of them.
Upon being stuck on the island for so long the boys soon uncover that some of them have an evil side. This is clearly seen with Jack who is throughout the book very evil but then transfers that evil to his group mates. '"Go on-now!" The two savages murmured. Jack spoke sharply. "Go on!"' (141). This is a scary thing to imagine since upon arriving on the island, the boys didn't in their wildest imagination think that they would be killing boys that were about their age and now they're being ordered to do so by this insane ruler. "I'm frightened. Of us" (157). It's clearly seen that the boys are terrified of what they have turned into at the hands of their leader. I for one would not subdue to the type of peer pressure that the boys are put in by Jack. I think that it was wrong of Jack to make these boys join his group which was all about the wrong type of stuff such as, hurting or even killing their enemies. Ralph on the other hand was much more peaceful and didn't want any type of violence tied in with his group. He soon realized however that Jack is the enemy so he acted on that and retaliated a little bit, but not to the extent that Jack did by killing some of the members of Ralph's clan. This is why we think this theme statement is accurate.
