Characters:
Ralph: He is the protagonist in the story and is the leader of the group of the boys stranded on the island. He attempts to organize the boys efforts to build a small civilization on the island until they're rescued. Ralph represents civilization in the story by setting down rules and fights that would happen. Ralph is a flat and dynamic character because he only changes a little bit by starting as the leader and then starting to become a little hostile upon meeting Jack who wants nothing more than to take the leadership role from Ralph. Ralph clearly has a problem with Jack since Jack is trying to remove him as the leadership role and replace himself. I also believe that this is his internal conflict because even though he didn't want to become hostile with Jack, he had to when Jack was threatening him to the point of attempted murder.
Piggy: He's very smart but made fun of by the rest of the boys. He has a weight problem and has asthma. He's the feminine voice in the group because he speaks what he thinks is right and what is wrong. I think the group should praise someone like Piggy being that he gives some intellect to the these boys. Piggy is flat and static because he doesn't really change. He's still, a nice boy throughout the story, he never goes to Jack's group. Piggy stays true to his word and doesn't leave Ralph and even though he's flat and static, he's still an incredible character to me upon reading. Piggy has a problem with Jack mostly since Jack makes fun of Piggy's weight so much. Piggy doesn't retaliate with anything mean however, he instead just keeps to himself. The internal conflict that Piggy has is his weight and how Jack makes fun of him. I believe that Piggy should just stay the way he is and not worry about what other people say but it's clear that internally his weight is all he can think about.
Simon: He is on a totally different level from all the other boys. Simon holds a kind of innate, spiritual human goodness that is deeply connected with nature. He's very peaceful which is a good quality to have in this insane situation that the boys are in. Simon is also a static and flat character because he maintains this peaceful and spiritual personality throughout the story instead of becoming a character like Ralph, Piggy, etc. Simon really doesn't have any problems with any of the other characters in the story so therefore we don't believe he has any main internal conflict. If he had to have one internal conflict, it might be his thoughts about spirits and such and just how he thinks about what is going on within the island.
Jack: This strong-willed character is the novel’s main representative of violence and the desire for power—in essence, he is the opposite of Ralph. From the beginning of the novel, Jack desires power above all other things and wants nothing more than to take Ralph out of his leadership role that way he can take over. Jack is a also a static and flat character. Jack starts off as a very evil person dependent on taking the leadership role from Ralph and that never changes. He's an evil kid throughout the story and that seizes to change. Jack dislikes Ralph very much because of these reasons and I believe this is the internal conflict in the story for Jack, he wants leadership so bad but since Ralph is leader, Jack will stop at nothing until he is leader. This is something that can really get to you and is his clear internal conflict on whether or not he should do the right thing and just let Ralph be leader.
