Q: What was your first impression of the novel? Did you feel a connection with any of the characters upon reading about them? If so, discuss that connection.
A: I was automatically enthralled when reading the novel. I felt that as the book developed the characters would as well. The book went from a some what happy tale about friendship to a dark tale about survival and with that story change came a major character change. Such is said for Ralph who started off as the leader of the boys but then Jack stepped in "We don't need the conch anymore - we know who should say things!"(102). The conch provided a certain aspect of trust to the boys, at least that's what I thought. I believe that when Jack said the boys shouldn't use this conch anymore the boys lost a certain part of the island that really allowed them to have thoughts about their decisions.
Q: Have you read or seen anything that relates to this story? If so, where did you see this relationship? Book, Movie? Explain.
Q: If you were trapped on an island just like the boys how would you react? Would you try and remain calm or go into mass chaos? Do you think you would ever be the same upon leaving the island if you ever did so? Explain.
A: If I were trapped on an island like the boys were then I would be pretty scared at first. The overall shock of being in the middle of nowhere would be the first thing that I would feel. After I got over it, most likely I would start to calm down and try to think of ways to survive starting with getting shelter. The worst thing that I could do is go act like a hooligan and freak out. This would cause many problems. Leaving the island I think I would be a changed person because it would teach me how to survive without technology that I have grown so accustomed to.
